THE TRASH IN ITS PLACE! - AYTANA ALVAREZ- ECUADOR


Did you know that in Ecuador 12,900 tons of waste are generated every day?

Only 6% of these materials are recycled, 94% of the waste ends up contaminating the planet irreparably.

Recycling is more than an action, it is the value of responsibility to preserve natural resources. Garbage is not garbage, recycling is an opportunity for our planet.

One of famous supermarkets in Ecuador “Supermaxi” has historically promoted good environmental practices. Since 2018 they have been providing color-coded bags for common, recyclable and organic waste to encourage proper waste management dishwasher containers- Today, it goes a step further with the installation of recycling points, GIRA.

GIRA, member of “Favorita” Corporate, is the first environmental manager of non-hazardous waste in Ecuador, certified by the Ministry of the Environment. It has specific containers for recycling. It is introduced in the most well-known supermarkets in Ecuadorian cities: Supermaxi and Megamaxi, these give its customers the possibility of creating a lesser environmental impact.

In addition to this, Supermaxi and GIRA maintain mass outreach campaigns, information in local stores, as well as other environmental education and care programs.

This company has initiated an integrated waste management project that involves citizens and companies in collaborating with the disposal of packaging waste.

GIRA recycling points are available, where 10 types of waste are collected and sorted. The location of the points, in parking areas and free access areas in stores and shopping centers, facilitates the delivery of recycled material, taking advantage of the visit to the supermarket.

To make recycling easier, a guide of containers and how to recycle them. For example:


1. PET containers:

Disposable beverage bottles and plastic containers for fruits, vegetables and eggs.

Plastic caps for rigid plastic, PET, glass or tetra pak bottles and jars.


2. Flexible plastics:

Supermarket and store closures, wrapping, soft and flexible plastics.


3. Rigid plastics:

Detergent and cleaning product containers, shampoo bottles, margarine and cheese.

This campaign of the Supermaxi Ecuador store was also created with the objective of raising awareness and educating about the importance of recycling- The advertising song "La basura en su lugar" explains how to distribute garbage by color.

In this way a country like Ecuador approaches what we call circular economy, contributing daily with the products it consumes.
